REGULAR MEETING
November 14, 2006

Members Present: Susan Bottcher, Mike Gerdes, Cheryl Grundman, Greg Hunzeker, Kelly Kreifels, Steve Ruenholl

The Nemaha Valley Schools Board of Education met in regular session at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2006. A current copy of the agenda was available for inspection in the office of the Superintendent prior to the meeting.

The National Champion FFA Agri Science team made a presentation on their project.

The minutes of the October 9, 2006 regular meeting and October 9, 2006 special meetings were approved as presented.

A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Gerdes to approve General Fund claims in the amount of $210,272.92. Roll call vote: Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Kreifels-yes, Ruenholl-yes. Carried 6-0.

BOARD COMMITTEE REPORT

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Principal Gottschalk reported on the following:

A. The November and December activity calendars were distributed.

B. Mr. Gottschalk is participating in the NELI leadership program which is sponsored by the Nebraska Council of School Administrators.

C. The status of dropouts from last year who returned to school this year was reviewed.

D. The State of the Schools report was distributed and discussed.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Superintendent Moles reported on the following:

A. The results of the long-range planning session were discussed. A meeting will be held in January or February as a next step in the planning process.

B. The election results were discussed. Susan Bottcher and Mike Gerdes were re-elected to the Board of Education. Teresa Goracke was a declared write-in candidate and was elected.

C. High school enrollment projections through the 2016-17 school year were discussed in relation to the freeholding rules for school districts that have override elections.

D. Nemaha Valley will be sending a team to the Sportsmanship Summit which will be held on Tuesday, November 21. Steve Ruenholl will be the Board representative on the team.

E. The ALICAP report on Workmen’s Comp coverage was reviewed. Nemaha Valley’s experience modifier has dropped as a result of lower claims so the cost of the insurance will go down.

F. The Nebraska Supreme Court case involving recreational liability was discussed.

G. Nemaha Valley is beginning to make plans for possible pandemic flu outbreaks.

H. There are concerns with the volleyball standards. A new system may be needed.

I. Steve Ruenholl and Supt. Moles will conduct a new board member orientation with Teresa Goracke in December.

FUTURE DATES

A. The NASB/NASA Fall Education Conference will be held in Omaha on November 16 and 17.

B. The staff-board holiday dinner will be held on Saturday, November 18.

OLD BUSINESS

NEW BUSINESS

A motion was made by Bottcher and seconded by Kreifels to approve suggested revisions to policies 5600 (Driving Automobiles), 5600.06 (Married Students), 5600.07 (Student Activity Fund), 5600.08 (School Activities), 5600.09 (Field Trips), and 5600.11 (School Lunch/Breakfast). Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Kreifels-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes. Carried 6-0.

A motion was made by Hunzeker and seconded by Gerdes to approve the annual audit. Roll call vote: Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Kreifels-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.

A recess was declared at 9:10 p.m.

The meeting was reconvened at 9:35 p.m.

A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Bottcher to enter executive session to conduct the Superintendent’s evaluation. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Kreifels-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes. Carried 6-0.

Entered executive session at 9:36 p.m.

A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Gerdes to leave executive session. Roll call vote: Kreifels-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.

Left executive session at 11:25 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:26 p.m., with the next regular meeting to be held on Monday, December 11, 2006, at 7:30 p.m., at the school.
