BOARD OF EDUCATION
REGULAR MEETING
February 14, 2007
7:30 P.M.
Members Present: Susan Bottcher, Mike Gerdes, Teresa Goracke (absent), Cheryl Grundman, Greg Hunzeker, Steve Ruenholl
Also Present: Jack Moles, Superintendent; Kirk Gottschalk, Principal; Bev Wiebke, Secretary

The Nemaha Valley Schools Board of Education met in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. A current copy of the agenda was available for inspection in the office of the Superintendent prior to the meeting.
The minutes of the January 8, 2007 regular meeting were approved as presented.
A motion was made by Bottcher and seconded by Gerdes to approve General Fund claims in the amount of $182,820.93. Roll call vote: Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-absent, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Ruenholl-yes. Carried 5-0.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD
Steve Ruenholl presented Kelly Kreifels with a plaque in appreciation for his eight years of service on the Board of Education.
PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD
COMMUNICATION WITH THE BOARD
A note of appreciation from the family of Luke Saathoff was read.
BOARD COMMITTEE REPORT
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Principal Gottschalk reported on the following:
A. The February and March activity calendars were distributed.
B. The results of the Johnson County Spelling Contest were distributed. Nemaha Valley students won four of the eight places.
C. The State Writing Assessments have been completed.
SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
Superintendent Moles reported on the following:
A. Steve Ruenholl was appointed to the Americanism Committee.
B. The current legislative session was discussed.
C. The Nebraska Insurance Premium Bonding Program was discussed.
D. State Aid figures have been released. Nemaha Valley is scheduled to receive $45,750 for the 2007-08 school year. This is a drop of $135,976 from the current year.
E. Nemaha Valley National Honor Society and FFA will host a blood drive at the school on March 1.
F. The services of One Stop, a company that does potential employee background checks was discussed.
G. The school can access electronic driving records for employees from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
FUTURE DATES
A. The NASB Legislative Issues Conference will be held in Lincoln on February 26.
B. A School Law for Board Members workshop will be held in Lincoln on March 15.
C. The NRCSA Spring Conference will be held in Kearney on March 20 and 21.
OLD BUSINESS
Steve Ruenholl reported that he sent a letter to individual members of the Syracuse Board of Education and Supt. Brad Buller. This letter, which asked for Syracuse to consider a feasibility study between the two districts, had been authorized by the Nemaha Valley Board of Education at its January meeting. He reported that he had received no response from the Syracuse Board of Education. Supt. Moles reported that Supt. Buller had called him on January 15 to inform him that Syracuse was not interested in a feasibility study between the two districts.
NEW BUSINESS
A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Gerdes to rejoin the Nebraska Association of School Boards for the 2007-08 school year. Roll call vote: Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-absent, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Ruenholl-yes. Carried 5-0.
A motion was made by Gerdes and seconded by Hunzeker to approve the application of Tracie Beethe for a local substitute certificate. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Goracke-absent, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes. Carried 5-0.
A recess was declared at 8:15 p.m.
The meeting was reconvened at 8:40 p.m.
A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Bottcher to enter executive session to discuss personnel and legal issues. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-absent, Grundman-yes. Carried 5-0.
Entered executive session at 8:40 p.m.
A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Bottcher to leave executive session. Roll call vote: Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Goracke-absent, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 5-0.
Left executive session at 8:52 p.m.
A discussion was held concerning the drop in State Aid. The options available to the district were discussed.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 p.m., with the next regular meeting to be held on Monday, March 12, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., at the school.
