The Nemaha Valley Schools Board of Education (BOE) met in special session as legally posted at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2007, at the school, for the purpose of considering the merger agreement with Tecumseh Public Schools. The Tecumseh Board of Education was also in attendance and held a special meeting at the same time.
Steve Ruenholl called the meeting to order at 8:35 p.m. and stated that a copy of the Open Meetings Law was posted in the room.
President Ruenholl welcomed all in attendance and outlined the purpose of the meeting.
Rex Schultze, legal counsel for Tecumseh Public Schools, outlined the proposed merger agreement.
Discussion was held on whether to bring the middle schools and high schools together for the 2007-08 or 2008-09 school years.
Tecumseh adopted a motion on a 6-0 vote to have K-5 at both sites, combined grades 6-8 in Cook, and combined grades 9-12 in Tecumseh for the 2007-08 school year.
A motion was made by Hunzeker and seconded by Goracke to have K-5 at both sites, combined grades 6-8 in Cook, and combined grades 9-12 in Tecumseh for the 2007-08 school year. Roll call vote: Bottcher-no, Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Goracke-yes, Ruenholl-yes. Carried 5-1.
A motion was made by Goracke and seconded by Gerdes to change section IV, A, 2 from 2009-2010 to 2008-2009. Roll call vote: Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Goracke-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes. Carried 6-0.
Tecumseh adopted the same motion on a 6-0 vote.
Tecumseh adopted a motion on a 6-0 vote to approve the merger resolution as amended and adopted by the Board of Education.
A motion was made by Grundman and seconded by Hunzeker to approve the merger resolution as amended and adopted by the Board of Education. Roll call vote: Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes, Goracke-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes. Carried 6-0.
The Tecumseh Board of Education identified their members who will serve on the Board for the newly merged district. They will be Steve Nolte (4-year term), Sue Borcher (4-year term) and Barb Gottula (2-year term).
A motion was made by Ruenholl and seconded by Bottcher to name Greg Hunzeker, Teresa Goracke, and Mike Gerdes as members on the Board for the newly merged district. Roll call vote: Hunzeker-yes, Goracke-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes. Carried 6-0.
A motion was made by Bottcher and seconded by Goracke to designate Greg Hunzeker as having a 4-year term and Teresa Goracke and Mike Gerdes as having 2-year terms on the Board for the newly merged district. Roll call vote: Goracke-yes, Ruenholl-yes, Bottcher-yes, Gerdes-yes, Grundman-yes, Hunzeker-yes. Carried 6-0.
It was decided that those who will serve on the Board of Education of the newly merged district will meet in the coming week to decide on a recommendation on a new Superintendent. This recommendation will be acted on by the two separate Boards of Education on Monday, May 7.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 p.m., with the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held on Monday, May 14, 2007, at the school.
